Pan Handlers

By Lee Hanlon

Just how do we deal with them? Do we make them leave town? That only displaces them. In Criminology terms, that is referred to as Crime Displacement. They get the boot from one town only to go to another. Then they get the boot from that town only to go else where.

Displacing pan handlers is not the solution. To come up with a viable solution we must first ask this question: “What was the cause of their current circumstances?”

The answer to that question will aid us in coming up with a more realistic solution to addressing the problems of pan handling on a case by case basis.

Robert Inglis, 27 was charged and convicted in a Prince George Court on July 10, 2008 with mischief and uttering threats. The judge gave Inglis a two-week sentence and ordered him out of town as a part of his probation for a two year period.

Inglis is now terrorizing senior citizens in Williams Lake. That in itself is a breach of probation. Banning the likes of Inglis from entering a town is not the solution. The only solution in dealing with career criminals like Inglis is life in prison.

For example, the sentencing option for mischief is either a 2 year term or a term not to exceed 10 years, and the sentencing option for uttering threats is either a summary conviction or a term not to exceed 5 years. Other charges Inglis has been possession of stolen property, forgery, and of course breach of probation. In each case Inglis should have been given the maximum term. Which means at least 25 years. And with his aggressive manner of pan handling and long list of convictions, Inglis should be classified as a dangerous offender. The so-called judge should also share a cell with Mr. Inglis.

It is high time that concerned Canadians take a stand up to the nonsense of the so-called Judiciary Independence!

And as for Scott Nelson, the mayor of Williams Lake to say “We won’t stop here” and then suggest that Inglis be booted out is beyond irresponsible. Inglis has already been barred from one town only to terrorize another. If Nelson is so concerned for the safety and freedom of his town why doesn’t he show the same concern for all of Canada and push for a longer jail term? Maybe Nelson should join the judge in the same cell as Inglis?

Just when will the so-called community leaders of our so-called justice system wake up and start protecting Canadian communities as they were sworn to do?
